LA vs Hate will be popping up at Grand Performances for a celebration of the cumbia diaspora featuring Chucho Ponce Los Daddy’s, Yeison Landero, Turbo Sonidero, and DJ Chihuahua. Born in Brooklyn, New York, and based in his father’s hometown of Chinantla, Puebla, Chucho Ponce Los Daddy’s innovates the cumbia poblano sound infusing it with a hip-hop beatmaker sensibility. Chucho Ponce Los Daddy’s performs extensively throughout the US and Mexico bringing the diasporic sounds of “Puebla York” to the world. Although originally from Colombia, cumbia in Puebla draws heavily from the indigenous-inspired Andean cumbia highlighting keyboards and Moog synthesizers rather than the accordions and guacharaca popular in Mexico City’s brand of cumbia. In dialogue with migrant experience, Los Daddys pushes this style into the future.

La Plaza de Cultura y Arte CinCO de MAyo Celebration
Many people think Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican holiday that was brought to the United States by Mexican immigrants in the early 20th century, but it is not. It is not even celebrated in most of Mexico. Some people think that Cinco de Mayo is a “fake holiday” invented by beer companies in the 1980s in order to sell beer, but it is not that either.
Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated as a national holiday in Mexico because it was created and first celebrated by Latinos living in California, in 1862.
Join LA vs Hate at La Plaza de Cultura y Arte to discover California’s connection to the Battle of Puebla through theatrical performances, music, hands-on workshops, and more. Guest performers include DJ Ani & DJ Sol. Food by Tamales Veracruz y Más and beverages will be available for sale.

BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TO STOP ISLAMOPHOBIC AND XENOPHOBIC HARASSMENT
Right to Be will be hosting this 75-minute interactive training will teach you Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Muslims and those who are perceived to be Muslim are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Islamophobic and Xenophobic harassment online or in person.
Co-hosted by CAIR-Chicago, an organization at the forefront of fighting Islamophobia and hate faced by Muslim Americans and other marginalized communities.
