Solidarity Mural

As part of the LA vs Hate program, we are issuing a series of grants to empower local organizers to leverage the power of the arts to confront and heal from the trauma of hate.

The first of these partnerships was designed to uplift youth voices in the face of increasing division and violence is between the Black and Asian communities, and within a climate of anti-Asian hate triggered by the rhetoric surrounding the pandemic.

Over the course of 3 months, more than 20 youth from across the County were engaged in a cross-cultural collaboration culminating in a mural at The Asian American Drug Abuse Program Center in South LA.

Reflecting on their experience developing the mural and learning from their peers, a number of the students involved in the solidarity mural project put pen to paper.

Standing on land that has been stolen

Old and young all invited

Listening to people's stories

Imagination is all we need

Different appearance but a lot in common

Accepting and caring

Remembering, honoring

Intrepid people we are

Together we stand and rise

Yay solidarity!

The tensions were rising and rough

but we triumphed through friendship and love

we all were excited to be United

To write a good poem is tough
